Part 1:
Have you ever been in very cold weather?[when?]
No, I have not. I have lived in the south of a tropical country, Vietnam, which is near from the equator. So, I have not once spent the feeling of a cold weather.
How often is the weather cold where you come from?
I live in Soc Trang province which is in the south of Vietnam. Obviously, a cold weather is a rarity here. However, it gets a little colder in winter.
Are some parts of your country colder than others?[Why?]
Of course, there are many places which are colder than my home place because my province is not so near from the North Pole as other parts of the country. And the cold place I like to mention is Sa Pa. Sa Pa town is one of the coldest places in Vietnam since it is a high area in the north. Snow used to fall here.
Would you prefer to live in a hot place or a cold place?[Why?]
Given the choice between a hot place and a cold place, I would prefer to live in a cold place. As I feel very uncomfortable in the heat which often makes us easy to get angry and difficult to think. So, I think the little colder weather is good for me to work and makes me feel more comfortable.
Part 2:
Describe a competition that you took part in
There are many competitions that I took part in. And a competion I’d like to talk about is a game called “Big game”. In a camping trip to Phan Thiet with my classmates in the university last year, I played this game. It took place at 12pm sharp. There were five teams and each one had about 8 to 10 people. We had to pass seven stations and at each one, there were some requirements for each team to do. These requiments themselves made this game interesting. First, we did something such as using hands to pour the water into the bottle, using mouth to hold a spoon to move a lemon to other members and solving a secret letter at last. After that we moved to other station. It was so funny. We felt very happy to do these with our team. We were closer and knew more about the others. These are also the reasons why I’d like to take part in this game. At that time, my team won the game but that was not the most important. The prize was a package containing a lot of cake and sweet. And we had memories that we never forget.
Describe a competition (TV, college/work or sports competition) that you took part in.
Last semester, my school organized an annual learning competition named FESE. This is a competition not only for students in my school but also for students who major in economics of some universities in Ho Chi Minh City. It was financed by stock companies such as HSC, Viet Capital, VN Direct, etc. FESE imitated a stock exchange transaction in reality but your accounts were imaginary and time exchanges as well as some rules were easier for you – investors. Almost students who
majored in finance banking in my school had to take part in this competition including me. Firstly, I had to buy an account to transactions. Secondly, I took part in seminars and seven constant transaction sessions as well as online transaction. Until the competition finished, the organization board would pick out 10 accounts which were the most profitable to award the prizes. The winner could receive the biggest prize worth 3 million VND and opportunities to be on probation in finance companies. As the slogan of the competition: “FESE – where you build your dream” I had interesting experiences galore about eventful stock market. I realized that I had to take the bull by the horns when I got into a situation from which I would not be able to extricate myself. I was sitting pretty and also blew it but everything was good. Although I didn’t get any prizes, I would try my best next year.
PART 3
Competitions in school
Why do you think some school teachers use competitions as class activities?
Personally, the competitive activities in class are an effectively educated method. Firstly, this teaching way is useful to train some essential skills such as confidence, activeness and will to overcome oneself and others. Secondly, the competitive games are also the strong motivation to help students‘improvement. Finally, teachers can guide them how to play fair through the conflict contest. Day by day, the experiences in class games become valuable lessons in their real lives.
Do you think it is a good thing to give prizes to children who do well at school? Why?
From my point of view, a coin has two sides. First, it is a good way to encourage students’ developments. When giving the prizes, it makes the competition more interesting and students have more motivation. However, the prizes may become the final target of many students and then whatever it can happen they try any way to get it.
